Denmark recently welcomed the Extraordinary Taxi Ride to town. Malaysian brothers Shih Gang and Shaun, accompanied by Extraordinary Taxi Driver, Doug Slater, were given a guided tour of Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks by local tour operator, David Bomba from Out of Sight Tours. As they climbed over the magnificent granite boulders in William Bay National Park they were intrigued by the mellow sounds of a flute and drum playing in the distance. Overhead colourful kites flew in the breeze. With their intrepid guide, they journeyed down through a chasm of granite rocks to discover their welcome party on the beach at Elephant Rocks. In a gaily decorated tent, musicians, Shire Councillors, tourism operators and locals had assembled to greet them. To their surprise, the elephants had emerged from the water and were camped on the beach nearby, enjoying the local brew – Elephant Rock Cider!
Chair of Denmark Tourism Incorporated, Mr Kim Barrow, welcomed the brothers to the region and encouraged them to return again when they had more time to take in the area’s amazing scenery and wonderful attractions. The brothers later said in their blog: “Greens Pool is a natural wonder that’s truly breathtaking. Elephant Rocks were extraordinary and the reception the locals had organised at the end was a huge and pleasant surprise”.
The Extraordinary Taxi Ride is Tourism WA’s latest marketing campaign. Inspiration for the Extraordinary Taxi Ride campaign came from a real taxi journey in the 1930s. This was when a taxi driver, Charlie Heard, drove three elderly ladies as passengers from Melbourne to Darwin and back. This unusual story prompted Tourism WA to create their own extraordinary journey in Western Australia.

Western Australia’s South Coast region is one step closer to becoming recognised as a National Landscape, Tourism Australia and Parks Australia’s initiative to identify the country’s top natural and cultural destinations.
South Coast National Landscapes Steering Committee Chair, Cheryl Edwardes said the committee was recently advised that its submission had progressed through to the first stage of the application process.
“The South Coast region is acknowledged as one of 34 internationally recognised biodiversity hot spots in the world, which is of global importance.”
“The submission was considered favourably because of the region’s abundant natural, and cultural offerings which are a draw card for international visitors,” Ms Edwardes said.
“The committee submitted an application to the Federal ‘National Landscapes’, to become one of the 15 destinations because it will be a focus for international marketing and promotion undertaken by Tourism Australia.”
“The next steps involve an experience audit and branding workshops, and I encourage anyone who is interested to be involved to contact your local tourism office or visitor centre.”
The South Coast region extends from the Tuart Forest, north of Busselton, along the coastline through to Cape Arid, Esperance.
The South Coast National Landscapes steering committee is made up of 15 participants from Government and non_Government organisations from Esperance through Busselton.
