Wine in Denmark

The first vines were planted in Denmark 1976, at Tinglewood Wines, using cuttings from Mount Barker. The first vintage occurred in 1980 - though it was to be another ten years before a second vineyard commenced, at Karriview Wines, followed by a host of new vineyards since.

Since then wines from Denmark have quickly grown in quality and today a host of award-winning wines are on display. Each year more medals are being won by the local winemakers.

Award Winning Denmark Wineries

In the 2010 James Halliday Wine Companion the 2007 Forest Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, received 97 points making it the equal best Cabernet Sauvignon in Australia, alongside Balnaves The Tall Reserve and the 2008 Block 1 Riesling also received high scores making it into the best of the best variety for the 5th consecutive year!

Old Kent River's 2004 Chardonnay has won Best WA Wine of the Show at the 2006 Perth Royal Show.  The judges were blown away by this wine, describing its fragrant nectarine and citrus fruit and subtle oak as being in immaculate balance.  Debbie and Mark Noack were pleasantly surprised at their success, but think the wine is still two years away from its best.

The Great Southern Regional Wine Centre

If you can't get out to the cellar door, but want to get a bottle of local wine to enjoy, you can't go past the Great Southern Regional Wine Centre as the place to find any of the wines produced in Denmark.  The Centre also carries a complete range of Great Southern Wines.  It is located in the heart of Denmark at the Denmark Liquor Store and is open Monday to Saturday 9.30 am - 8.00
pm, phone 9848 1546.

Nearby Wine Regions

Denmark is in the Great Southern Wine area and close by our region are many fine wineries in and around Mt Barker and the Frankland area. In fact, Denmark is a great place to plan a wine tour that can take in two to three days of exploring the wineries of the Great Southern.

Honeywine, or Mead was once the nectar of the gods but is now available to mortals with discerning taste.  Bartholomews Meadery on the South Coast Highway west of Denmark, produces honey from native flora of the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Honey is a highly nutritious food source and can also aid in the healing of burns, wounds and ulcers.  At Bartholomews Meadery you will discover many wonderful products made by the bees including finest quality unprocessed honey, propolis (a natural antibiotic), bee pollen, beeswax and royal jelly products.  Bartholomew's Metheglin recently won Gold as the world's best Metheglin at the 2006 International Mead Festival in Boulder, Colarado.
